Zhi Nu’s mother, the Queen Mother of the West, discovered her daughter’s transgression and, outraged by her defiance of celestial order, ordered Zhi Nu’s immediate return to heaven. Niu Lang, heartbroken at being separated from his beloved wife, sought the help of a wise old ox, who advised him to seek the assistance of celestial beings.

With the ox’s guidance, Niu Lang procured a magical cloak that granted him the ability to fly through the heavens. He ascended towards the heavenly realm determined to reunite with Zhi Nu. However, their reunion was tragically thwarted by the Queen Mother’s intervention. She summoned the celestial generals and ordered them to create a wide chasm between Niu Lang and Zhi Nu using the Milky Way as a dividing line.

Recognizing their enduring love, the Jade Emperor, touched by their plight, granted them one night per year – on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month – to reunite across the Milky Way.
